On September 2, 2009, Jeremy Kvamme went for a motorcycle ride with his uncle and some friends. They were all heading home after driving out to Forest River when Jeremy must have misread a curve in the road and went into the ditch. He was initially unconscious and then his uncle was able to wake him. When he woke, he said he could not feel his legs and we all feared that he was paralyzed. He was rushed to Altru Hospital where they did surgery on his spinal cord. Two weeks later he was transferred to Craig Hospital in Colorado, where he spent the next 3 months. Jeremy suffered a catastrophic injury to his spinal cord, C5 / C6 Asia A complete, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. He has very limited use of his hands and no use of his legs.
Here she is.... Serena Ray born on Christmas Day!
January 16, 2010 Jeremy is going to the Boardwalk to watch the Sioux hockey game tonight at 6:00 pm! So, if you can make it over there he would love to see some familiar faces....! He has been doing really great. Jeremy finally got his neck brace off a few days ago, so he is very happy about that. He has been going to rehab 3 days a week; he has been going back and forth by himself! He is really enjoying being a Dad! Serena is such a great baby.
New Visiting Schedule! If you would like to come and visit and we hope you will.... The best days and times are Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday from about 2:30pm until about 8:30pm. If you don't know where Jeremy lives yet, then just give him a call and he will give you his address. He has his therapy on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and will be doing some extra therapy at home those days, so he gets really tired from that. Everything else is moving forward... little by little.
January 6, 2010 Sorry there hasn't been any updates for a few days...! Jeremy is doing pretty good. His positive attitude and spirit help keep all of us strong. He has been to therapy twice this week and he goes again on Friday. He goes for 1 hour a day, which is a big change from the forty hour work week at Craig. We have been busy looking at all the equipment and trying to find out where we can get things and pricing. The most important piece of equipment is the FES bike and I have contacted the manufacturer and they are going to try and submit claims to BCBS and Medicaid, I guess they usually deny these claims, so keep your fingers crossed! Who knows... small miracles do happen... sometimes, right?
I spoke with Jeremy's PT about purchasing used equipment. She said that it would be fine to purchase a weight machine / or Richshaw used (it might be better to get a weight machine instead of the rickshaw because he can work more muscle groups with that) we can also purchase the EasyStand Evolv used if we can find it available. She said they wheelchair is very customized and should be ordered per the specifications given by Craig. I didn't know but there are many parts and it is all fitted for him. Not so important for an occasional user, but in Jeremy's case it would be important to order it as prescribed by Craig Hospital. I have been contacting numerous Durable Medical Equipment places to see if they have the EasyStand Evolv but I haven't had any luck. I am going to have Julie (PT) at Craig check around down there too. So that's sort of where we are at. I have contacted most of the places in Grand Forks, Bismarck and Fargo. Grand Forks Rehab is going to get back to me regarding costs.
Baby Serena is doing great. Laurie is feeling better and better. Mom has found some caregivers to help out. Jeremy has caregivers that help 8 hours per day. 9-3 in the morning and 8-10 at night. Things are coming together!!
This past decade was a very tough one on our family. We lost three cousins, two grandparents, we lost some dear friends and we almost lost Jeremy too. We plan to do our best to make 2010 a great year. Jeremy is so thrilled with his new daughter! He holds her on his lap with a boppy pillow and lays next to her in bed. She is such a sweet pea~ you have to come and visit her!

Jeremy wanted to thank everyone for all they have done, so many people have gone above and beyond what he would have ever expected. He is thankful for being able to get to Craig Hospital and thankful everyone who stayed the night with him when he wasn't doing well (Mom, Auntie C and Laurie), everyone who visited from near and far in Grand Forks and at Craig, thank you to Aunt Adele for your unwavering support everyday at Craig (and thank you for being pushy when I need it), thank you to everyone who worked behind the scene to get things done, checking on me, helping me, bringing in food, sending thoughtful cards, fruit, flowers, emails that keep him connected to everyone and in the loop, phone calls, visits, t-shirts, donations, support and gifts and your positive words of encouragement, hopeful attitudes and prayers that have helped me through this.
